And the woman on the scooter--she's obviously just there for comic effect, isn't she? As in, Look at the silly old woman who thinks she has a chance of competing. Niiiice.

They're all there for comic effect. You'll notice it's a dog track too. A bunch of out of shape people running after a vintage radio is supposed to be funny, not just the old woman on the scooter. I don't think she's singled out at all.

Hm, no, I think she is singled out. The shoppers who usually walk get to run, but she doesn't get a racing chair--that would make more sense. (Yes, I know it's ridiculous to "make more sense" in an ad about people chasing a radio around a dog track, but even within that logic...her presentation doesn't parallel theirs.)

Good point about walking/running and her speed. Although, my father-in-law used to ride one of those scooters, and honestly, he could go faster than most people running. The granny in the back should be way out in front laughing her head off, which would make for an interesting contrast to this ad.
