Conservative T-Shirts

These t-shirts are all available here. The site has the following definition:

Presumably the fact that I'm posting these means I don't understand humor. Of course, these could also be useful for a discussion of what is "funny" and who gets to decide that.

Liberals are emasculated sissies; conservatives are real men:

Torture is funny:

So is lynching:

Men Doing Housework Fantasy Calendar

This British calendar, found here, consists of photos of beefy men doing housework. And I thought I Love It When You Talk Clean to Me was just a joke.

Also note that it's another example of social activism through consumption--the company makes a donation to breast cancer research for every calendar sold.

More Urinals

I found this one here. Are those supposed to be nuns? If so...why?

This mural is from the Sofitel Hotel in New Zealand:

The photo was sent to me; you can find it here. I was initially a bit suspicious, but Snopes says it's true, so I decided to post it. I assume I don't really need to explain that they're making fun of both the idea that you're not supposed to look at anyone while using a urinal and men's fears that women really do care about penis size.

And I found more pictures of nun (or maybe the Virgin Mary?) urinals here.

I don't know what to make of them.

Thanks to Pitseleh S. for introducing me to even more urinal images to add to these!

Schoolgirl Outfit for Your Dog

One of my students took a picture of this outfit at the mall--I believe she said it's for sale at Spencer's. For the sexy Catholic (?) school-dog of your dreams!

Thanks, Blanca M.!

Products Shaped Like Female Bodies

Laura L. sent me all these images. She says many of them came from feministing.com. They go along with this and this post. Thanks, Laura!

Websites That Satirize Racial Relations In The U.S.

If you have a pulse and exist in or near the liberal blogsophere, you have likely been told that the website Stuff White People Like is hilarious. I don't share the love for the site, but it might be useful to bring it up in class in order to have a discussion about WHY people like it so much. What, exactly, is it tapping into?

The website, Black People Love Us, is, in my opinion, a smarter satire.

And my personal favorite, which I have successfully used in my Race and Ethnicity course numerous times, is Damali Ayo's Rent-A-Negro. It packs a real punch. (Oh, and yes, people do sometimes think the site is real and fill out the order information, including their credit card numbers.)

Mock Magazine Covers (And One Ad)

I thought these might be useful for making explicit some current cultural trends--I think things like the focus on pregnant celebrities' bodies are more obviously absurd when they're made so apparent.

Making fun of our obsession with celebrity pregnancies:

What the male version of a teen mag might look like:

And a fake SUV ad:

I found all these here.

'Cause Rape Is Funny

This bit appears on the Maxim magazine website. It uses rape, and women's apparent attraction to men who look like rapists, in order to be humorous. I think it's particularly interesting that it includes a jab at a Republican (or is it just "the establishment"?). If they are obviously leftist/anti-establishment, are we to believe that they must be good guys, therefore this use of rape for comedic value is okay? Or is this just another manifestation of the equal opportunity insult comedy found in products like South Park and Knocked Up? There is a lot going on here and I'm pretty sure I have yet to fully grasp it. Any thoughts?

Insult Comedy

This comic, Lisa Lampanelli, is a very successful comic whose entire act involves aggressively offending every possible group and congratulating herself on getting us to lighten up. The audience thinks it's great. Gwen and I saw her on Comedy Central tonight doing her own special, so this is mainstream comedy.

So how do we analyze this sociologically? Gwen and I are too demoralized to formulate a coherent response at this time. But at least we now know that it's not rape if he's good lookin'.

Ethnicity and Accents in Super Bowl XLII Ad

Here are two ads for http://www.salesgenie.com/SalesGenie/Index.aspx?bas_vendor=99831, both aired during tonight's Super Bowl and both, for no apparent reason, using animated characters with thick accents--in the first Indian, in the second, Chinese.

Women as Gold Diggers and Sex Providers: FOX News Commentator's Book

Rudov is a regular commentator on FOX News. Here is the text from the website selling this book:

"Are You Wining & Dining Her for Sex?

Most men pay their girlfriends and wives like prostitutes—cash, dinners, vacations, jewelry, cars, homes, and clothing—in exchange for sex. Not only unnecessary and emasculating, such stupid male behavior induces “purchased and entitled” women to fake their orgasms.

Like a car, a woman will take you where you guide her—assuming she’s a good match and you’re a good driver. Ignore her pings and rattles, and she’ll stop operating, strand you, or put you in a ditch.

Marc Rudov's new book—Under the Clitoral Hood: How to Crank Her Engine Without Cash, Booze, or Jumper CablesTM—helps men avoid golddiggers, learn what really turns women on, and end self-destructive chivalry. This provocative and hilarious book is a perfect sequel and companion to The Man's No-Nonsense Guide to Women. There's no book like it in the world."

Here's a companion graphic about gold-diggers:
