Agenda Setting

This is an interesting example of the way in which powerful media companies control what gets out there. MTV refused to show ads, made by the Media Foundation to promote Buy Nothing Day, on its station. They stated that the ad "goes further than we are willing to accept on our channels."

The ads are here. Thanks to AdBusters for this tip.

Too bad MTV wasn't protesting the pointlessness of Buy Nothing Day, something which also might make for an interesting discussion. Won't most purchases just be made on the previous or following day, leading to virtually no impact on profits? It sounds to me like a classic example of that form of social activism with virtually no actual commitment or impact whatsoever, like wearing a string bracelet in order to free Tibet.
