Gendered Parenting

I found this article in a parenting magazine. It suggests ways for dads to help their kids learn skills; all of these methods are sports-related. The kids shown are both boys and girls, but I think it's interesting that since it's advice for dads, everything has to be put in terms of sports; I don't think you'd see similar advice for moms. I suppose it is good that the article assumes that men do household chores, though.

Here are some examples: Laundry-Basket Rebound (practice tossing laundry into a basket), Toddler Free Throw (for unpacking groceries), Bowling for Brainpower.

On a related note, have you ever noticed that "Parenting" magazine (often found in doctor's waiting rooms) has a subheading that says "what matters to moms"? Every time I see that, it still blows my mind.

Parenting = moms

having fun and playing sports w/ kids = dads

I did notice that Parenting Tag LIne--does anyone know when it changed? I don't recall seeing it before last month. By the way, GREAT book out--it is HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE: The critical role of moms in sports. I read it last week after a father on my girls team told me about it. Title may throw you--it is actiaully for anyone involved in sports kids. It is brilliant as it pegs the problem with youth sports as the lack of women/moms to balance out the hyper competition.

I think the Parenting tag line has *always* been there. It's been bugging me for years!
